Houses and Cyclone Yasi

The Cyclone Testing Station has been looking into the performance of houses that were in the path of Cyclone Yasi. Initial reports indicate that homes designed to the latest codes survived reasonably well. In some areas, the storm surge created some havoc. Once again garage doors are coming under some scrutiny.

You can keep up with the reports from CTS at and clicking on "News and Information". A Technical alert has already been prepared in regard to Roller Doors. You can check out the Technical Alerts at

Rise in Loan Approvals Welcome News

ABC Radio this morning reported that finance approvals for owner-occupier dwellings in Queensland rose by 2% in December.

Master Builders Association spokesman Paul Bidwell called it a promising start to the year. "On the back of a 1.7 per cent increase in November, it's a very promising sign for us, considering that since August 2009 finance approvals have been in decline."

It is a promising start but there is also a feeling in the industry that it may be another twelve months before housing construction gets back to the 2009 levels.

Building designers are often the first to feel a change in housing activity and we would love to hear from building designers about what's happening out in the marketplace. If you have noticed any change, please post a comment here.
